The first written mention of the town dates back to the 9th century<\/strong>. Throughout the Middle Ages, Roubaix remained a small rural town, gradually developing around its wool industry.<\/p>\n

The 20th<\/strong> century marked the beginning of the decline of the textile industry. Inaugurated in 1902<\/strong> as a warehouse for the packaging and quality control of wool, the Condition Publique is now a major cultural center in Roubaix. This historic monument has been magnificently restored and converted into a space for the visual and performing arts. The building is a perfect example of early 20th<\/strong> century industrial architecture, with its iron and brick structure, and bears witness to Roubaix’s rich industrial history.<\/p>\n

Without a doubt, the highlight of Roubaix’s cultural scene is the Andr\u00e9 Diligent Museum of Art and Industry, better known as“La Piscine<\/a>“. This unique museum exhibits a rich collection of art in an exceptional historical setting, a former Art Deco<\/strong> swimming pool. Temporary exhibitions allow visitors to discover a variety of artists and artistic movements.
\nIn addition to the La Piscine museum, La Manufacture des Flandres <\/strong>is another important institution dedicated to the history of the city’s textile industry. It is both a museum and a textile production workshop.<\/p>\n

Festivals and cultural events<\/h3>\n

Roubaix is also renowned for its many festivals and cultural events. The Accordion Festival<\/strong> is an annual event that celebrates this emblematic instrument with concerts, workshops and demonstrations. La nuit des arts<\/strong>, meanwhile, is a special evening during which museums, galleries and artists’ studios open their doors to the public for exhibitions, performances and workshops.
